Description:
This course is designed to develop an understanding of how the macroscopic properties of matter arise from atomic and molecular interactions and how they can be studied from the point of view of both chemists and physicists.

Topics include: kinetic theory, Boltzmann distribution; introduction to thermodynamics and statistical mechanics; chemical and physical applications; intermolecular forces, equations of state; mechanical, thermal and elementary transport properties of gases, liquids and solids.

Assessment is by tests and final examination.

Prerequisites: M122 Particles in Motion or M150 Physics for Science and Engineering and M161 Calculus and Matrix Algebra (previously called Principles of Mathematics) or M182 Principles of Applied Mathematics. In addition, M141 Principles of Chemistry or M142 Chemistry for Life Sciences is recommended.

Administrative information:
This is a 1 semester course (15 weeks). Between 10-14 hours of study per week is required. It is a 3 point course.
